Leesburg, VA (November 3, 2016) – The gym was surprisingly empty when the Conference 14 volleyball championship began. Only a hearty band from the JV team huddled together on the Potomac Falls side and a bigger (but not big) and rowdy group of students and parents partially filled the home bleachers of Tusacrora.
Perhaps the initially low turnout was because both teams had defeated higher seeded opponents to get here--and maybe they weren't supposed to be there--but as the opening whistle sounded they were more than ready to play for the title.
Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted this gallery from the match.
The volume of noise in the gym rose dramatically in the first set as the lead alternated between the two teams. The 25-23 final score showed just how close it was, and the set point went to Tuscarora in front of a rapidly growing crowd of supporters now including helmeted members of the varsity football team in full chant mode.
That level of spirit went a long way as Tuscarora grabbed a 2-0 lead easily winning the next set, 25-12. Potomac Falls gave a valiant effort in the third set--demonstrating fully why they were qualified to advance to regional play--but could not hold on to a 24-20 lead. The Huskies closed the match and the championship with six straight points to win the third set, 26-24.
Both teams advanced to regionals with Tuscarora earning the top seed and a bye. Potomac Falls will play North Stafford with a chance to move on to the quarterfinals. The two teams could meet again, but only in the regional championship.
