2016.09.13 Volleyball: Handley @ Tuscarora

Leesburg, VA (September 13, 2016) – In response to a question about how the team was doing, the Tuscarora mom at the ticket table said that they were doing well, but she was unsure about tonight because several of the Huskies' key players were out sick. Was her daughter, the team's setter, one of them? No, she was "just getting over it." Knowing that John Handley had taken a set from the powerful Stone Bridge Bulldogs in the Phoenix tournament last weekend, this didn't sound like a very good situation for the home team.

Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted this gallery from the match.

The Huskies came out focused and ready, perhaps their under-manned status gave them some extra adrenaline. They won the first set easily.

But the Judges used the break to make some changes to their lineup and strategy and took the second set quickly to tie the score at 1-1. Then, in the third, Handley quickly opened up a five-point lead and maintained that margin even when Tuscarora tried to inch back in. It truly looked like the visitors had the match won.

But from somewhere special, the Huskies found their mojo again. Urging each other on while their coach barked encouragement, Tuscarora tied the match at 2-2.

Tied at ten in the deciding set, Tuscarora hung in there and won the match--the type of gut-check victory that a team can use to build momentum for the rest of the season.
