08.30.18 Volleyball: Stone Bridge @ Loudoun County

Leesburg, VA (August 30, 2018) – Early in a season, it's hard to tell which teams are ready for competing at the top level. Even so, it was pretty evident that the visiting Stone Bridge Bulldogs--on the strength of three straight sweeps--and the Loudoun County Raiders--on a similar two-match streak--might be two of them.

Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.

Confidently, the Raiders bolted out to a 9-1 lead in the first set. The Bulldogs got it going, but could never reduce that margin much as Loudoun County won the opening set easily, 25-16. That trend continued in the second set--in an almost carbon copy Raider win--to establish a forbidding two-set lead.

Anyone who follows volleyball knows that, if it's anything, it's a game of momentum. But Stone Bridge was completely lacking in that area. That is until the third set. Somehow, they found a rhythm that powered them to their first win of the night. Could they find it again in the fourth set?

Yes, they sure could. Although the set was tied at sixteen apiece, the Bulldogs once again got a big surge of momentum to propel them into the deciding set with all of the energy in the gym on their side of the court.

Right away, Stone Bridge used that energy to build a 6-1 lead, and it looked like they were headed to a huge win. But Loudoun County has years of experience--and the championships to back it up--and they were not to go down easily. Once the teams were tied at 9-9, it was all Raiders as they closed out the match with a surge of their own, winning 15-10, and 3-2 sets.

Final score: Loudoun County 3 - Stone Bridge 2
