Ashburn, VA (August 27, 2018) – Early in a new season, most teams want to play against a lesser opponent so they can build some momentum for the games ahead. Up against Millbrook, a VHSL 4A semi-finalist a year ago, this was probably not going to be one of those opponents for Rock Ridge.
Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.
This early in the schedule you could expect teams to still be in the process of coming together. This is when you most often see two players going for the same ball and neither coming up with it. This is when you see more serves into the net than ever.
But, remarkably, both teams in this match seemed pretty well organized. Sure, there were a few rough spots, but, generally, there were relatively few unforced errors.
Millbrook came out quickly and took the first set, 25-7, without much resistance from Rock Ridge. The Pioneers had earned a certain level of confidence from last year's playoff run, and it showed as they took the second set, 25-9, as the Phoenix showed steady improvement.
Rock Ridge saved their best set for the third, and actually held the lead a few times early. But, again, Millbrook's steady and efficient team play ruled the day as they won the third set, 25-16, and the match.
Final score: Millbrook 3 - Rock Ridge 0
