Lansdowne, VA (May 26, 2017) – Entering the match for the Conference 28 Championship, both the host Riverside Rams and the visiting James Monroe Yellow Jackets had won two playoff games. The Rams had a slightly easier route, beating the eighth and fifth seeds, while the Jackets had to upset the second seeded William Monroe to get here.
Play was fairly balanced in the first half, but Riverside had more quality chances. If not for the play of the James Monroe keeper, the score surely would have been lopsided.
Chas Sumser, Viva Loudoun photographer, was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.
It was not until Wes Forst pushed home a rebound off of a Michael Zhang free kick that the Rams began to put some distance between themselves and their opponents, ending the first half at 1-0 by scoring in the last minute.
The second half started off equally taut, but Riverside wore James Monroe down with a consistently potent attack crowned by goals from Connor Boxall and Chris Castro.
Final score: Riverside 3 - James Monroe 0.
