2017.05.25 Boys Soccer: Albemarle @ Briar Woods, 5A North Quarterfinal

Ashburn, VA (May 25, 2017) – The opening round of the regional playoffs are usually fairly easy for the higher seeded team. But that really depends on the level of quality in each part of the region, and that can vary from year to year.

At first, it seemed like the Briar Woods Falcons had control of this match. After winning the Conference 14 championship, the home team was feeling strong against the visiting Albemarle Patriots. The Falcons' confidence was boosted when Wes Anderson chipped a high ball over the Patriot keeper's hands for an early 1-0 lead.

But that confidence was short-lived and Albemarle came back about ten minutes later with a blistering shot that slid through Micah Scott's hands for the tying goal. From that point on through the end of regulation, it seemed as though most of the play was in the Briar Woods defensive end. However, neither team would score again before the final whistle.

Two regular overtimes and two sudden death periods still yielded no winner, and so it was on to penalties. The Falcons were perfect in their four tries, and Scott came up big with two diving saves that sent Albemarle home and Briar Woods on to the next round.

Final score: Briar Woods 2 - Albemarle 1. 4-2 on penalties.
