Brambleton, VA (May 30, 2018) – The Briar Woods Falcons earned their top seed and home field advantage in the Region 5C girls soccer playoffs amassing a 12-1-2 regular season record that dwarfed that of their opponent, the Stone Bridge Bulldogs. However, finishing with a modest 7-7-2 did not prevent Stone Bridge from performing well in the Potomac District tournament and advancing all the way to this regional semifinal.

To describe this game as a grind would be no understatement. Both teams fought valiantly from start to finish for possession and opportunity. In the first half, the Bulldogs had virtually no scoring chances while the host had a few good ones including a penalty kick that was captured and stopped by Stone Bridge keeper Natasha Sharif.
Based on the fact that the Falcons had already beaten the Bulldogs three times this season--including in the district tournament--this should have been an easy win. But each time Briar Woods pressed they were met by a scrappy, stingy Stone Bridge defense. Yes, most of the first half play was in the Bulldogs end, but the Bulldogs refused to give the Falcons any uncontested looks.
Things opened up somewhat as the second half began. Stone Bridge was finally able to get near the Briar Woods goal and the overall play seemed more balanced. Still, neither team could generate a score despite their best efforts.
As the game moved into the final minutes, either someone was going to get a late goal or this one was headed to overtime. And there was Emily Mutton to get that goal for Briar Woods as the hard-working forward finally beat Sharif with under eight minutes remaining. A few minutes later, Catie Bryant would add an insurance goal to send the Falcons on to the regional final.
Final score: Briar Woods 2 - Stone Bridge 0
