05.10.18 Girls Soccer: Tuscarora @ Briar Woods

Brambleton, VA (May 10, 2018) – The Tuscarora Huskies (10-1-2) and Briar Woods Falcons (9-1-2) girls soccer teams entered this game with nearly identical seasons behind them. They had played once before, and the Falcons had won easily, 4-1, at Tuscarora.

But this is playoff time, and both teams needed to demonstrate that they were ready for the final push of the 2018 season.

Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.

With storms looming, the game got off to a fast start by skipping the National Anthem and player introductions. The Huskies might have wanted that extra moment of preparation back because the Falcons were more than ready. Just one minute into the first half, Catie Bryant scored the first of her two goals and immediately put visiting Tuscarora on their collective heels.

A few minutes later, Allie Harvich scored to give the Falcons a commanding 2-0 lead. And then the rains came and forced a thirty-minute delay. That may have seemed like good news to the Huskies and a chance to regroup with plenty of time to get back in the game.

But as soon as play resumed, Briar Woods scored again. Alexa Zaknasky converted a beautiful cross from Bryant that skipped across the front of the goal mouth thanks to the brief rainstorm that had made the field a bit slicker. The score remained 3-0 as the half ended.

Tuscarora got organized at halftime and played a much stronger second half. They had several good scoring chances and solidified their defense creating a clear impression of why they are a top team as the season ends. And the Falcons' defense bent a little, but would not break. As the game wore on, both teams began liberal substitution to get their benches ready for the rigors of the postseason.

Two late goals by Keegan Bragg and Bryant put Tuscarora away for good and gave Briar Woods every confidence leading into the playoffs.

Final score: Briar Woods 5 - Tuscarora 0
