Brambleton, VA (May 10, 2018) – Briar Woods (12-1) was clearly the favorite as they hosted Tuscarora (8-5-1) in a late season tuneup for the playoffs. In the midst of an eleven-game winning streak, the Falcons had already beaten the Huskies once, 2-0, just three weeks ago.
Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.
But this game would prove to be no easy victory for the home team. The Huskies clearly came to play and brought an aggressive and opportunistic strategy with them. They also brought keeper Jeff Gates, and the junior net-minder was brilliant in the first half as he thwarted several great Falcon chances. His booming kicks cleared midfield virtually every time and helped reduce the pressure on the Tuscarora defense.
The majority of the game was played at midfield. Briar Woods methodical passing and collective composure was illustrative of their standing as one of the teams to beat as everyone heads toward regional and state competition.
The edge in time of possession would have to go to the Falcons, but it was probably closer than everyone expected. Just when it looked like Briar Woods was beginning to dominate, the Huskies would battle back for control of their own.
As time began to expire, overtime was looming. But then a series of corner kicks and long throw-ins began to cause trouble for the Huskies' defense. Each restart seemed to be a little more difficult to clear, and, finally, the Falcons' John Flynn punched one home for the winning goal.
Final score: Briar Woods 1 - Tuscarora 0
