2017.06.07 Boys Lacrosse: Midlothian @ Riverside, 4A State Semifinal

Lansdowne, VA (June 7, 2017) – The Riverside Rams wore special red jerseys signifying the importance of this first-ever semifinal boys lacrosse game at home. In their way was a tough Midlothian Trojans team who had equal reason to expect a spot in the state championship game.

With roaring crowds supporting both sides, the match opened up fast and tight. Both teams had the lead in the first quarter--including a two-goal margin for the Rams--but the period ended appropriately in a 3-3 tie.

Riverside was the only team to score in the second quarter and went into the locker room with a well-earned and a 5-3 lead.

But the Trojans fought back after the break outscoring the Rams by two goals and evening the score at 7-7.

The last quarter was perhaps the most thrilling of the season as Riverside scored three unanswered goals to take what seemed like an insurmountable lead. But Midlothian had more left in the tank and their patient offense tied it up to force overtime. In fact, the Trojans had the ball with under a minute left, but failed to score the game winner.

The overtime faceoff went to the Rams on a brilliantly executed timeout. Riverside put the ball in the hands of Taylor Musa, who already had three goals, and he delivered as expected, sending his team to Salem for the final.

Final score: Riverside 11 - Midlothian 10.
