06.05.18 Boys Lacrosse: Dominion @ Riverside, VHSL Class 4 Semifinal

Lansdowne, VA (June 5, 2018) – One of the exciting characteristics of lacrosse is that it is often a game of wild, fast changes in momentum and multiple surges. And if the Dominion Titans were to beat the Riverside Rams they were going to need to surge because they had already lost to them twice including in the region tournament.

Surprisingly, the opening momentum went to the Titans as they built a 5-2 first quarter lead. Kyle Kivinski led the Dominion attack with two goals during the period.

But the Rams would own the second quarter pulling the margin back to just one goal by halftime. The Titans still led, but only by 6-5.

Riverside continued to dominate in the third period and finally took the lead. As the period ended with the Rams ahead 10-8, it seemed like this is the way it should have been given the way things had gone between the two teams this season. The Titans had been good in each previous meeting, but not quite good enough.

When Riverside scored to open the fourth quarter--extending the lead even further--it felt like it was all over except for the shouting. But that's when the Dominion surge arrived. Netting four goals in the final seven minutes, including the winning goal by Andrew Buchner, the Titans suddenly transported themselves all the way to Salem for the state championship game.

Kivinski led Dominion and all scorers with five goals while Taylor Musa led the Rams with three.

Final score: Dominion 12 - Riverside 11
