Sterling, VA (May 11, 2018) – The regular season had come down to this: the George Mason Mustangs (11-1) visiting the Dominion Titans (12-0). A Mason victory would bring a three-team tangle at the top of the Dulles District, and a Titan victory would give Dominion a rare undefeated season and outright possession of first place heading into the post-season.
The Mustangs' only loss had come just four days earlier in a close match with the third team in the mix, Riverside. On the flip side, Domion's previous game was a 19-0 thrashing of Park View.
Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.
The first half was a taut, tense affair. In fact, Mason had the early lead on a goal by Claire Hiscott. But Dominion would take command right back at 2-1 and, amazingly, would never fall behind again. Yes, the Mustangs would tie the game at two, three and four goals apiece, but they could not beat Titan's goalie Kate Peterson in any kind of a sustained way. When Tierney Schaible scored just before the break, she put the Titans in front for good.
Virtually all of Dominion's first half goals had senior Catherine Renick's name on them. She got the first one, and then assisted on the next three as the Titans led 5-4 at halftime.
As soon as the second half began, Dominion broke the game open with seven unanswered goals combined with a complete shutdown of the Mustang attack. Based on the even play of the first half, the run was unexpected, but it showed just how good this Titans team can be. Annaliese Damm, Mya Brock and Schaible had two goals each during this dominating stretch.
With ten minutes left in the game, the Dominion lead was insurmountable at 12-4. Mason's Ashley Zigler would add three straight late goals to make the result seem closer than it actually was. But too much damage had been done for the Mustangs to come all the way back as the Titans closed out an impressive win and an impressive season.
Final score: Dominion 12 - George Mason 7
