Sterling, VA (May 4, 2018) – With just a few games remaining in the Spring 2018 girls lacrosse season, the Riverside Rams (13-1) and the Dominion Titans (11-0) met with supremacy in the Dulles District at stake.
Surprisingly threatening weather conditions greeted both teams as they took to the Titan stadium field. Up until then it had been a wickedly cold season, yet few games had been altered by wet conditions. The forecast showed no precipitation, but the skies were telling a different story.
Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.
Despite the potentially precarious conditions, both teams played nearly flawless lacrosse from the outset. Dominion got off to a fast start as Tierney Schaible scored two of her five goals right away. But Katherine Lutz and Lilly Boswell would tally for Riverside to even the score at 2-2.
With eight minutes left in the first half, the game was tied, 4-4. But that's when the Titans went on their biggest sustained attack of the night scoring five unanswered goals including two from Mya Brock. The Rams' Jenna Greason was able to tuck one away with just seconds remaining in the half, but Dominion had a solid lead at the break, 9-5.
After halftime, Riverside had the edge and gradually worked themselves back into the contest. Bryn McCaughey led the Rams with two of their six second half goals including the one that tied it up, 11-11, with just five minutes remaining in the game. At that point, all of the momentum was on the Riverside side.
But Jessica Lee had the answer for Dominion as she scored to put the Titans ahead once more with under three minutes left. Riverside had an apparent goal cancelled out due to an illegal follow-through penalty, and Dominion held on for the win retaining their top spot and undefeated status for another night.
Final score: Dominion 12 - Riverside 11
