Leesburg, VA (August 25, 2017) – The beginning of the high school football season always brings perfectly manicured fields and high hopes. Such was the case for the inaugural game for the Freedom Eagles and the Heritage Pride. Both teams were looking to start with a win to get the ball rolling for the season ahead.
Freedom had a right to some nervous jitters because their coaching staff--led by Jason Belser--had only been in place for a few short months. On the other side of the field stood the venerable Reed Prosser and a team of coaches who had been through all of this before.
Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.
Both teams were actively working out kinks in the first quarter, and the Pride were the only ones to score giving them a 7-0 first quarter lead. They doubled that margin by halftime and then added a field goal in the third quarter to take a a 16-0 lead with twelve minutes to play.
In the meantime, the Eagles showed that they have a bit further to go, but that's what it takes when everyone is adjusting to working together for a common goal. In general, the Freedom could not muster sustained drives that resulted in points and their defense was good, but unable to hold the Pride out of the end zone.
Heritage scored once more in the fourth quarter to cap off a solid performance all the way around.
Final score: Heritage 22 - Freedom 0.
