Potomac Falls, VA (October 30, 2018) – Although the Potomac Falls Panthers had the top seed in the region, the fifth seeded Briar Woods Falcons had every reason to feel confident coming into this semifinal match. After all, just two weeks ago they had beaten the Panthers, 2-1. The question on everyone's mind was whether the Falcons could repeat that outcome.
Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.
Two minutes into the game, it looked like the answer was going to be a resounding, "Yes." From the opening whistle Briar Woods raced down the field and suddenly had a 1-0 lead off the stick of Deepti Narayanan. It was a stunning start in front of the Panthers' home crowd.
After catching their breath, Potomac Falls immediately pressed their attack into motion and began building momentum. But Briar Woods midfield, led by captain Emma Brunet, and the defensive backfield, anchored by goalie Lillian Muller, rebuffed every Panther thrust.
Even when given a penalty corner after first half time had expired, Potomac Falls was unable to score. With every player pulled up except goalie Anna Shapiro, Potomac Falls could not find the back of the Falcons' goal. As the teams went into the break, Briar Woods still led by virtue of that second-minute shot, 1-0.
The second half continued the same way with Potomac Falls having an edge in possession, just not on the scoreboard. But when a big moment is required, the Panthers call on Abby Asuncion, who finally tied it up with a slicing backhand shot in the 41st minute.
For the next twenty minutes, both teams played outstanding field hockey. It was virtually a mistake free game, and it was going to be decided by one break. When the regulation horn sounded, however, the score remained tied, 1-1.
Early in overtime, the indefatigable Asuncion began to take over. Just four minutes into the golden goal period, she collected the ball at midfield and proceeded to weave through the Briar Woods defense all the way to the goal. And that was her moment as she slotted the ball neatly to the right of Muller for the game winner.
Final score: Potomac Falls 2 - Briar Woods 1
