Ashburn, VA (September 12, 2018) – On paper, there wasn't much difference between the Heritage Pride (5-0) and the Stone Bridge Bulldogs (4-0).
Both teams sported prolific offenses with the Pride scoring rate (4.6 goals per game) slightly better than the Bulldogs' pace (4.3). And both teams had stingy defenses with the Bulldogs giving up just two goals to the Pride's single blemish.
In other words, this match had all the markings of a tight and tense matchup between two great teams. But it didn't quite go that way.
Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.
Stone Bridge was jolted in the first minute of the game as Heritage's efficient attacker Lindsey Blythe scored the first of her two goals. No one in the stadium expected that to happen, least of all the Bulldogs' defense.
But the home team pulled it together and the next ten minutes represented the most balanced part of the game as both teams worked the ball up and down the field. But, again, it was Blythe who tapped in a Heritage goal to extend the margin to 2-0. Stone Bridge again locked down the defense, but could not muster much of an attack, and the score remained the same into halftime.
After Logue's goal there was a noticeable momentum shift, but it lasted about a minute before Rossbach scored twice more to seal the victory for the Pride. Interestingly, the difference between the two teams was less than the final score might indicate, but it was more than the pre-game paper would suggest.
Final score: Heritage 6 - Stone Bridge 1
