Sterling, VA (October 26, 2017) – To date, the eight-team Dulles District field hockey tournament had gone perfectly true to form. The higher seed won every quarterfinal game and both semifinals, which led to the championship matchup between the top two teams.
And the specific path for the finalists had been remarkably the same. The top-seeded Potomac Falls Panthers won their first match over John Champe, 6-0, while the second-seeded Stone Bridge Bulldogs had beaten Rock Ridge, 5-0. And then both semifinals were 2-1 thrillers.
But there was a difference big enough to make Potomac Falls a slight favorite, and that was the regular season win the Panthers earned, 3-0.
Chas Sumser Photography was at Potomac to capture the championship action and emotion and posted a gallery of 92 images from the game.
So it was somewhat of a surprise when--on a short corner with just over eight minutes gone in the first half--Bulldog Immy Smith found the ball amidst a mass of humanity in front of the Panther goal and put her team in the lead with a quick shot.
But Potomac Falls surged back to control the first half with a threatening attack and a clear edge in time of possession. They seemed on the verge of scoring a number of times, but the Stone Bridge defense and goalie Rachel DeMay were simply unyielding.
But just when you thought the game was about to be tied, Stone Bridge got their second short corner--and their second goal on a laser from Emma Logue just before halftime to take a 2-0 lead into the break.
The second half was more of the same from Potomac Falls, but a late goal from the indefatigable Abby Asuncion--with just four seconds remaining in the game--would alter the winning margin, but not change the final outcome. By then it was too late and the Bulldogs were tournament champions.
Perhaps the tale of this game can effectively be told relative to short corner statistics. Potomac Falls dominated in that department--with at least ten in the second half--without scoring on any of them while Stone Bridge converted both of their first half opportunities.
Final score: Stone Bridge 2 - Potomac Falls 1.
