Sterling, VA (October 5, 2017) – In what has become something of a tradition for Loudoun County high school field hockey, four teams gathered for a double-header. In the nightcap, the Woodgrove Wolverines were the "home" team for an important matchup--at Dominion High School.
The opponent, the Riverside Rams, were one of the hottest teams in the area, sporting a 9-1 record, but Woodgrove had something to prove, too. Their overall record stood at 7-3, which had them sitting right behind the top three teams, all of whom were playing here tonight.

The Wolverines brought their very best game, and so did the Rams. From start to finish there was almost no separation between the two teams. It felt like Woodgrove had more time of possession, but at the same time Riverside had the better chances to score.
A clear trend in field hockey play is the emergence of outstanding defense and goalkeeping. The keepers in this match were sprawling, batting, and stick-handling away everything that came near the nets.
The Rams scored early in the first half on a goal from Grace Keefe, but Woodgrove did not relent, which kept the halftime score at 1-0.
That slim margin stayed the same until late in the second half, which is a credit to the Wolverine resilience. But Riverside's steady play and athletic confidence resulted in a second goal, this one from Eva Yacura, and a hard-fought victory.
Final score: Riverside 2 - Woodgrove 0.
