South Riding, VA (September 12, 2017) – At Freedom High School, the Heritage Pride "visited" the Potomac Falls Panthers for a matchup of highly-rated teams. Heading into the game, Heritage was 5-1, but Potomac Falls had a slightly better overall record at 5-0.
Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.
In a tightly contested first half, there was hardly a difference between the two contestants. Both had good chances, and both played excellent defense. Goalkeepers for both teams were as active as any in Loudoun County, at times diving full out to disrupt scoring chances. A goal by the Pride's Kaitlyn Hardin created just a bit of halftime separation as Heritage led, 1-0, at the break.
With just a few minutes gone in the second period, Heritage scored what would become the winning goal on a breakaway by Sydney Krieger.
But that seemed to energize Potomac Falls and, especially, Abby Asuncion. The speedy midfielder took over the field for the rest of the game, igniting her teammates with a goal with nearly twenty minutes remaining.
Despite several more opportunities, though, the Panthers never found the net again. Both teams thrilled the spectators with close calls and great defense, but neither would score the rest of the way.
Final score: Heritage 2 - Potomac Falls 1.
