Purcellville, VA (August 23, 2016) – As an exhausting, overheated summer comes to a close, there was an air of newness and excitement in the stadium as four Loudoun County high schools played their initial varsity field hockey matches. While many on the sidelines--including this photographer--tried to make sense of the nuances of this sport, the athletes on the field were busy making it happen.
Game 1: Woodgrove 8 - Loudoun Valley 0
Looking similar to the powerhouse girls lacrosse team, in uniform and style, the Wolverines appear to be the team to beat--at least among the four that played on this night. Loudoun Valley was rarely able to get much pressure on the Woodgrove goal while the visitors kept the ball on the attack most of the afternoon.
Leading 6-0 at halftime, the Wolverines added two more goals before the mercy rule was applied, effectively ending the game midway through the second half.
