Aldie, VA (August 22, 2018) – The last day of summer, literally, brought a slight touch of cooler weather to the first game of a field hockey double-header. And it was the John Champe Knights hosting the Heritage Pride.
Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.
As the player introductions were made for the visiting Pride, it was impossible not to notice the number of returning and experienced veteran players. The question was whether they would be in good form or would they be just getting their feet under them again.
On the other side, the Knights were also sporting a senior-heavy team so the matchup looked to be a good one.
Although Heritage completely dominated play, keeping the ball in the Champe defensive end virtually the entire game, the Knights' defense was up to the task and kept the score very close in the first half. The Pride's relentless attack resulted in only a 2-0 lead.
As the second half began, Champe's defense continued to hold, but that changed about midway through the period. Led by Josie Rossbach and Sydney Krieger, the Pride went on a four-goal tear to finish off the valiant Knights' effort.
And, yes, Heritage was in excellent form and looks to be ready for a great season. John Champe will need to strengthen their attack, but they're starting with a strong defense and excellent goalkeeping.
Final score: Heritage 6 - John Champe 0
