Leesburg, VA (September 16, 2017) – The Oatlands course is beautiful. Hard, but beautiful. A long, sweeping downhill opens the race, but at the half-mile mark the runners had back virtually the way they came. A quick turn again and they are headed down and through a stream before they are even halfway done with the 5K course.
I hope they appreciated that dousing of cool water because that's all they would get on this day. Not quite into the fall season, and perhaps experiencing some of the Hurricane Irma effects, runners were treated to unseasonably hot and humid weather as they competed in one of the area's premier cross country events.
Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the meet.
After that stream, a long, steady uphill ensues including the "Woods Hill" segment, which is littered with rocks, stumps and roots just waiting to capture an unsuspecting ankle or two. The hill crested, the participants get a roller coaster downhill before heading up "the Hill" and beginning their push for home.
This year, that hill was even more difficult as the sun blazed down on the tired participants. Their summer and early season training had to get them through the last half mile and across the finish line.
Loudoun Valley High School had, well, just a spectacular day. In addition to superlative individual results, the team captured top honors in: JV Underclass Boys, Varsity A Boys, Varsity A Girls, Varsity B Boys and Varsity B Girls. In the other three races they were the runners-up.
Individual and team results can be found at milestat.com. Photos of participants from Loudoun County high schools can be found below.
