Purcellville, VA (August 20, 2016) – Over 250 runners of all ages competed in the 2016 Lydia's Race, a charity event benefiting YoungStroke and Woodgrove Cross Country in honor of Lydia Cromwell, a former Woodgrove High School, and Christopher Newport University cross country and track athlete who suffered a stroke on April 23, 2016. Two Loudoun County high schools, Riverside and Woodgrove, were well represented among athletes from throughout the community. Friends from CNU also ran in Lydia's honor.
VivaLoudoun photographer Chas Sumser covered the event and posted a photo gallery (searchable by bib number) of the race.
Woodgrove coaches Scott Burns and Kauren Fritzius started the race by introducing Lydia, her mother, a representative from YoungStroke, and athletes in attendance who were stroke victims. At the honk of Coach Burns' truck horn, the runners were off and through the woods of the challenging and beautiful official Woodgrove 5k cross country course.
