Purcellville, VA (February 16, 2018) – It's always exciting when two of the oldest high schools in the county meet in an important game, and this one was no different.
The gym was packed early for the matchup between Dulles District regular season champion, the Loudoun Valley Vikings, and their rival, the Loudoun County Raiders.
Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.
Both teams seemed a bit tight to start the game. There was no lack of hustle on either side, but points were at a premium. Midway through the first period the score was tied, 8-8. Loudoun Valley then went on a tear to open up a nine-point lead at halftime. Led by team captain, Celine Fink, the Vikings were efficient and unselfish. Dominant center Megan Stevenson was outstanding inside.
Early in the second quarter, a Raider stepped to the foul line and the already raucous Jungle began to chant, "0 for 9, 0 for 9." The next missed shot then meant that Loudoun County had collectively failed to sink ten straight free throws to start the game. That inefficiency would prove crucial, but it primarily meant that the Raiders had a big hill to climb to get back in the game.
Led by Julia Ng, Loudoun County started clawing back in the third quarter. With just six seconds left in the period the Raiders actually took their first lead, 40-39. But the Vikings inbounded the ball, raced down the court, and scored to go in front again.
The game would remain close throughout the final period. At 4:47, it was tied, 49-49, and it would stay that way until Haley Pasqualone stepped to the foul line with about forty seconds to play. She made one of two to give the Vikings the lead. Despite a frantic struggle at the other end, including a last-second attempt by Natalie Villaflor, Loudoun Valley would hold on for the title.
