Purcellville, VA (February 16, 2018) – The first game of the double-header featured one of the county's oldest rivalries. In the nightcap, it would be one of the newest. Perennial powerhouse, the Loudoun Valley Vikings, was set to host the Woodgrove Wolverines, one of the areas newer schools, for the district title.
The closeness of the schools was more than just proximity as many of the players grew up playing together in youth leagues. Yes, it would be an intense game, but there was respect and friendliness that comes with cross-town history.
Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.
It looked like the Vikings would have their way in this one as they bolted out to take a 15-4 lead. But in their first big surge of the night, the Wolverines would almost completely close the gap on a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Zach Cunningham. Loudoun Valley led, but just barely, 17-16, as the quarter ended.
In the second quarter, the Vikings gradually expanded the lead again. Their offense was spread throughout the team, and Mark Melbourne was a big factor. At the break, the Vikings led 39-30.
The third period was the highest scoring segment of the night for both teams. Loudoun Valley would surge again behind the steady play of Jalen Williams who gave his team their biggest lead, 58-45.
But Woodgrove was not done. They put together their best run of the night as Alex Owen hit a pair of long range shot to bring the Wolverines close at 58-54. But Melbourne reasserted himself and led the final push to victory.
The Vikings survived a scare as Jordon Miller suffered an ankle injury midway through the third quarter. He'll be sore tomorrow, and he'll need to rest and recuperate as the team prepares for regionals, but he was able to come back into the game which was a good sign.
Final score: Loudoun Valley 79 - Woodgrove 67
