2019.01.11 Girls Basketball: Freedom @ Broad Run

Ashburn, VA (January 11, 2019) – Sporting an unblemished, 12-0, record the Freedom Eagles were on an absolute roll. The home-standing Broad Run Spartans, on the other hand, were in the midst of a more modest 3-8 season, but they had just had their most convincing win of the season over John Champe.

The Spartans task was tall, but they had earned a little bit of confidence. The only question was whether it would make a difference against the powerful Eagle five.

Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.

Throughout the game, no one could fault Broad Run for their scrappy effort. The young team, with just three seniors, battled from start to finish and tried to stay competitive with the more experienced visitors, who had seven 12th graders. But the Eagles were simply too much for the Spartans, and that was evident right from the start. Down by 23 at the end of the first quarter, Broad Run never got any closer and Freedom never looked back.

Freedom was simply and spectacularly efficient, making short work of any threat from the Spartans. It's no secret now that the Eagles are clearly the team to beat in districts, and certainly up through regionals. They make it look easy with sturdy defense and flawless offensive execution. There is no let up between their starting five and the next three, and even when the whole team was substituted out in the fourth quarter they continued to expand the lead.

Yes, the Eagles still have Loudoun Valley, Tuscarora, and Potomac Falls to play--and all three teams are having strong seasons. But this team made it to the state tournament last year, and brought everyone back. From all indications their determination to return to that lofty level is only the first step. They want to take one step more this time.

Final score: Freedom 68 - Broad Run 21
