South Riding, VA (January 19, 2018) – The Freedom Eagles are having a great season. One of the few blemishes on their record came, however, from the Tuscarora Huskies in December. The 61-57 loss could be considered a moral victory when you note that Tuscarora is having a better than good season. In fact, at 15-0, they were toying with greatness.
With the majority of the season now behind both teams and the playoffs coming into view, the Eagles were trying to extend a modest winning streak. A rematch with the Huskies--in front of a boisterous home crowd--presented a chance to prove that they need to be considered among the elite of Loudoun County teams.
Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.
Halfway through the first period, Tuscarora was forced to call a timeout. Freedom had gotten often to a brilliant start. Jaelyn Batts was powerful at both ends of the court and Kamryn Meador was tenaciously controlling the point, and they had her team leading 11-2. That break stabilized the Huskies, but they could not cut into that margin.
In the second period, Kennedy Middleton finally was able to assert herself effectively. Her twisting, slashing scoring drives brought Tuscarora close at 23-17, but the Eagles would push the lead back out to ten by halftime, 31-21.
And it would never be that close again.
From start to finish, Freedom was completely dominant. They expanded their lead to 42-25 at the end of the third quarter and then forced the Huskies to completely change their strategy in the fourth. Shooting threes, which they weren't making, and then forcing Freedom to shoot foul shots, which they were making, turned out not to be a winning approach.
After a late technical foul was called on Tuscarora's Isabellah Middleton, the game was essentially over. As Batts and Jalyn Scales calmly sank the resultant free throws, their lead continued to grow as a satisfied group of Freedom girls gathered at midcourt to watch.
Yes, there is room at the top for the Freedom Eagles.
Final score: Freedom 59 - Tuscarora 41
