Ashburn, VA (December 27, 2017) – If the first quarter was any indication, this one was going to a low-scoring, grind-it-out type of game. The host Rock Ridge Phoenix and the Jefferson Cougars both were playing solid defense and struggling to score. The Cougars had a 6-4 lead at the end of the period, but the game was essentially even.
Perhaps the trip from Charlestown, WV, had to wear off, but whatever it was Jefferson shook it off in the second quarter. Exhibiting a stifling defense and a methodical offense, led by the hot shooting of Jontasya Cainthey, the Cougars shut down the Phoenix and tilted the scoreboard going into halftime with a nineteen point bulge at 24-5.
Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.
Showing a lot of character, the Phoenix fought back in the second half. They woke up in the third quarter and capped it with a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Kayla Davis.
The excitement in the home gym really began to build as Rock Ridge continued to cut into the Jefferson lead behind the aggressive offense of Jordan Teel. With about two minutes left, the Cougars were forced to take a timeout to slow the Phoenix comeback still leading 50-37.
And that was as close as it would get as Jefferson played the remainder of the game with more patience and sturdier defense earning a trip to the tournament semifinals.
Final score: Jefferson 57 - Rock Ridge 41
